The Society of Nirmala Dasi Sisters (SNDS) is a society for women in the Catholic Church was founded by the inspiration of the words of Jesus"just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me" (Mt. 25:40) on 23rd November 1971 by Mar. Joseph Kundukulam, the then bishop of Thrissur Diocese-Kerala, who was known as the'Father of the Poor’ and the co-founder Msgr. Joseph Vilangadan in the diocese of Thrissur.
Our Society is started as a Pious Union at St. Christina Home, Pullazhy, Thrissur-Kerala, India, 6 Kilometers away from Thrissur town on the way to Kanjani to take care of the unwed mothers and their babe. There were 14 young ladies who served these mothers and their babies voluntarily. They were eagerly waiting for the divine call to religious life they shared their views and wishes to Bishop Kundukulam to dedicate themselves to lead a life only for the service of God and His people. Their request was granted soon. It was a felt need of that time to wipe off the tears of these women and their babies who were suffering a lot by the negligence from their own parents and relatives. The stigma in the society, the ill treatment of their beloveds, made them more humiliated and thrown outs from their families. Later we extend our service to the neediest and neglected sections of the community.
We have taken Mother Mary, the Immaculate Virgin, for our model and patroness. We were formed by the Founding Fathers together with and the assistance of CMC sisters to live a life of consecration, holiness and service of the poor and derelict.
Inspired by the Founders and encouraged by the local Ordinaries of Archdiocese of Trichur and the wholehearted welcome accorded to it by different bishops, down the years the Institute, growing in the number of members and houses, could extend its manifold services to a good number of places both inside India and abroad, always responding with an"Yes, Lord, Here I am!" (Lk. 1:38) to the call of the Jesus to serve his poor ones anywhere.
